Well here we are at that time of year once again. So I'll take this opportunity to wish all of you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2026. I presume most followers of this blog will be busy with holidays and family gatherings over this festive time of year, so I'll take a break from posting and will resume early in the New Year.

Here today for your listening pleasure are 3 more compilations: 

1) Blues, R&B, Soul & Gospel Records now up to Volume 220 with 21 tracks dating from 1936 to 1987. Among the artists featured here are Homer Banks, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Copeland, Inez & Charlie Foxx, Jimmy McGriff, Big Joe Turner, Ottilie Patterson & Chris Barber, along with several other Blues/R&B greats.

2) Soul Party is now up to Volume 104, with another compilation of "Moaning, Groaning & Crying" soul songs dating from 1959 through to 2024. This fine collection of tearjerkers brings you Etta James, Maxine Brown, Syl Johnson, Little Johnny Taylor, James Brown, Jerry Butler, plus other noted Soul/R&B performers.

3) A couple of years back I made up a Christmas compilation of mixed genres titled "Bob's Christmas Special". I reposted it last year and have done so again this year as we do have many new followers of the blog. However this is the Revised & Edited 2025 Edition. I felt the earlier version was a bit long, plus it had a few tracks that were upscaled low-bitrates, now this new edition contains only true 320kbps recordings.

Today's photo is the mighty Syl Johnson (1936-2022), a superb singer, guitar and harmonica player who performed and recorded both blues and soul. His early career in Chicago during the 1950s Syl worked and recorded with Magic Sam, Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Wells, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed and others. I was fortunate to see him play live in 2009 at a blues pub in Perth. After the gig I managed to have a quick chat with Syl, we shook hands and I told him how much I enjoyed his performance.

Steve Tallis - ZOZO (1999) 

I first met Steve Tallis back in the late 1960s when he was the singer for Perth's very popular "Jelly Roll Bakers". For a few years over the late 60s/early 70s we hung out together and briefly played in the same blues band in Perth in 1970. I ran into Steve again in 1972 when we were both living in Melbourne, and we caught up frequently over the next few years at various gigs Steve was doing. By the late 1970s however I had relocated to Thailand and had abandoned my desires to be a professional musician, instead focusing on a new career in photojournalism. Nonetheless, I do occasionally make visits back to Perth and if Steve is performing anywhere nearby I try to catch up with my old friend.

Steve Tallis is an Australian musician who does not play conventional blues. He always goes further and integrates blues with a more ethnic-merged music that some experts would define as World Music. His personal way of conceiving and performing music has led him to be considered as a creator of an obsessive hypnotic repetitive and free style. Violin, tabors, triangles or kettledrums are what you are going to hear plus other unusual instruments, together with Steve's twelve string guitar he plays in most of the seventeen songs included on this CD.

Sid Rumpo - First Offense (1974) 

Sid Rumpo formed in Perth in late 1971 and quickly became a popular blues/rock band on the Perth scene. In November 1972 the band won a local Battle Of The Bands competition and relocated to Melbourne. For the next couple of years Sid Rumpo made some TV appearances, played a few of the big music festivals, had some personnel changes, recorded one LP for Mushroom Records (Mushroom L35109), then disbanded in 1974.

The dynamic twin guitar attack dominates but the piano work is exceptional, there's some mean frantic drums & the vocals are suitably gruff but on key. A "one and done" gem & ageless hidden jewel.

RIP Steve Cropper (October 21, 1941 - December 3, 2025)

A sad loss for the music world with the passing of Steve "The Colonel" Cropper. He was the guitarist of the Stax Records house band, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, which backed artists such as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, and Johnnie Taylor. He also acted as the producer of many of these records. He was later a member of the Blues Brothers band. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him 36th on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.
