Bob's Cellar
Do you have some albums or music tracks you'd like to share? Then this is the place for you. Just post a comment listing the artist and album title and a link to download. Everything is welcome, all genres. Do you have any special requests? Then feel free to ask here. But please remember: no advertising and no links to paid sites.
Note: In order to keep 'The Cellar' to a manageable size I'll regularly go through and delete the chit-chat and delete any expired links. Generally the links will be active for a couple of months, so it'll be wise to check 'The Cellar' regularly and take what you need then. Once a link has expired and been deleted from the listings, then all trace of it has vanished and anyone wanting a copy later on will have to post a new request.
I'll leave the chit-chat up for about a week, after which time I think all the "Thank you..." and "You're most welcome..." type of comments have been read and served their purpose, so there's no need for this chit-chat to remain any longer. By regularly cleaning this up it will keep 'The Cellar' to a manageable size and make it far easier to navigate when searching for posts and links.

Donald Byrd - Off to the Races (1959) @320
ReplyDelete*Off to the Races (1959)
01. Lover, Come Back to Me (Oscar Hammerstein II,
Sigmund Romberg)
02. When Your Lover Has Gone (Einar A. Swan)
03. Sudwest Funk (Donald Byrd)
04. Paul's Pal (Sonny Rollins)
05. Off to the Races (Donald Byrd)
06. Down Tempo (Donald Byrd)
Personnel:
Released: 1959
Recorded: December 21, 1958
Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, NJ
Donald Byrd - trumpet,
Jackie McLean - alto saxophone (tracks 1 & 3-6)
Pepper Adams - baritone saxophone (tracks 1 & 3-6)
Wynton Kelly - piano
Sam Jones - bass
Art Taylor - drums
Producer - Alfred Lion
> Before trumpeter Donald Byrd began his flirtations
with fusion, funk, and pop in the 1960s and ’70s, he
was one of hard bop’s most satisfying practitioners.
1958's Off To the Races is one of his finest dates
from the period, and a stellar personnel list
(including baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, alto
saxophonist Jackie McLean, and pianist Wynton Kelly)
helps get things cooking. There is the usual Blue Note
assortment of ballads, blues, and up-tempo numbers,
but it’s the musicianship, particularly the fine,
fluid soloing of Byrd and McLean, that makes
this a keeper.
