Nice. Been listening to a lot of Django lately. 'Minor Swing' one of my faves.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoy it Mike, I've listened to a fair bit of Django over the years he certainly achieved a lot with those 2 fingers he had.
DeleteThanks Bob, as i have said before i am not a big fan of Jazz but some artists you just have to listen to now and then , like Django and Chet Baker but with Chet just a little at a time. Mike.
ReplyDeleteHi Mike, like yourself I'm not a big jazz fan, some of it I just can't listen to, some is so weird and crazy.

ReplyDeleteThanks Bob. I am a jazz fan but the word "jazz" covers a wide range of styles. I'm not into the very early stuff or the later "new sound" with it's shrieks, honks, squeeks and snorts. I appreciate that they were seeking to express something spiritual by taking music beyond whatever but 50's through to late 60's does it for me. Much was discovered then that was truly ground breaking and by the 70's they'd come up with everything worth coming up with (for me ). I realise there are some great jazz musicians today but mainly it's a rehash of what went before. Listening to someone play like Coltrane or Montgomery or Brown is ok live but at home the originals are still the best. And as for fusion you'll find it in the op shops along with safari suits, waistcoats and lidless tupperware! Sincere apologies to all fusioneers it's just a matter of personal taste.
ReplyDeleteHi fluffyalbert, thanks for your most interesting comments. It looks like our tastes in jazz are very similar. I'm also not that keen on the very early jazz. In fact my interest in jazz doesn't wander far from the black American Bop, and the white American heroin users of the 50s & 60s. And yes, like the Blues, it seems the best work has been done already.
