  3. Quick Story: Who Wrote Wabash Cannonball? William Kindt & J. A. Roff wrote sheet Music in 1904 and get the credit... but they were just writing words that were around as far back as 1882. Actually, NOBODY wrote the song. It evolved in Hobo Camps. New Hobos were required to sing a song for the group, and the words kept evolving. Mostly they were singing about the Great Train that would carry them to Heaven. The Carter Family sang Wabash Cannonball in 1929, and when Roy Acuff sang it on the Grand Ol' Opry in 1936 (Station WSM in Nashville) it sold millions of radios and the Golden Age of Radio began. Finally in 1949 a Train Station in St. Louis named their Detroit to St. Louis Run the Wabash Cannonball. Up til then it was a ficticious train (a death coach taking Hobos to Heaven).
