Marianne Faithfull's music took a raw turn with 1979's Broken English. Her decision to shy away from her 1960s pop roots and delve into her own personal desperation, helped mold her into an artist beyond a once-cute pop star. Though never issued as a stand-alone CD, Live In Hollywood was released as part of a DVD package. This show, promoting the 2004 release "Before The Poison" features only two songs from that album on this CD, alongside the abrasive “The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan,” Barry Reynolds' chilling “Times Square” and Faithfull's take on John Lennon's "Working Class Hero", one of the only viable interpretations of Lennon's biting song, delivered here with that wonderfully weathered, don't-fuck-with-this-bitch voice and an appropriately ominous band.
Bob, turned 80 a few weeks ago... had I made a list of all my favorite singers who passed, I'll bet the list would be 2000+. Thanx for sharing this one. If all these artists do concerts in Heaven, I'd need eternity to hear 'em all!
ReplyDeleteHi moze, yes unfortunately we keep losing good singers along the way.
DeleteThanks for the Marianne Faithfull share lucky to have seen her when she toured OZ a few years ago a wonderful concert.
ReplyDeleteHi Rhodb, yes I remember when she toured Oz, sorry to have missed that.
DeleteI bought the DVD/CD combo back then Bob and I almost forgot there was a CD in there until I saw this your post. I also own some of her albums including Broken English which is a little different than her older stuff eh?
ReplyDeleteHi Wayne, yes she sure shocked a lot of people with that Broken English LP, I well remember when it came out and many people I knew we playing it often.
