 Albums That Deserve Another Listen

After Hour Blues (Biograph BLP 12010)

Released by Biograph Records in 1969, "After Hour Blues" featured recordings made in Chicago in 1949 by St. Louis Jimmy (James Burke Oden), Sunnyland Slim (Albert Luandrew) and Little Brother Montgomery (Eurreal Wilford Montgomery). In addition to the 1949 sessions, the album included two rare tracks by Little Brother Montgomery recorded in Grafton, Wisconsin in September 1930.

At a time when guitar blues heavily dominated the blues reissue market, "After Hour Blues" made a refreshing change as it placed some focus on blues piano players.

I got my copy of the LP in 1969/1970 and it became an instant favorite, especially so for the four tough St. Louis Jimmy tracks that were recorded in April 1949 with an unknown pianist, who was most likely Roosevelt Sykes.

"After Hour Blues" remains one of my most favorite blues albums and one that most definitely deserves another listen.
