Today sees the first in a new series "Assorted Best Of Jazz". Following the same format as my Blues/R&B compilations these will contain an assortment of styles: old and new and everything in between - guitar jazz, piano jazz, sax & trumpet jazz, vocal and instrumental, the greats and the lesser known artists. Kicking the series off is Volume 01 - Midnight In San Juan, with tracks from Earl Klugh, Tiny Grimes, Wes Montgomery, Dinah Washington, Hampton Hawes, Wayne Shorter, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Count Basie, Dave Pike, and many other fine musicians.

Continuing with the Best Of Blues, R&B, Soul & Gospel, now up to Volume 56, with 21 superb tracks from 1953 to 2006. Included here are B.B. King & Eric Clapton, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Percy Mayfield, The Blind Boys Of Alabama, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Big Daddy Kinsey, and several others.

Finally, in case anyone missed it, here's an interesting PBS program called "Wyld Rice" that was filmed circa. 1979-1980 about blues guitarist Pat Hare & the prison band "Sounds Incarcerated". Thanks to fluffyalbert for providing the link. https://www.pbs.org/video/auburn-hare-18658/

As always, dig in, enjoy the music, and don't forget to leave a comment.

  1. Watched the Wyld Rice doc on Pat Hare and really enjoyed it. What a fantastic guitar player, no showing off just pure fluid finger work. A pity he never got to record again while serving his sentence. Thank you both for sharing the link

    1. Yes, I was very impressed by his outstanding guitar playing in that doc. A shame some company like Delmark or Alligator didn't arrange a recording session. However I did notice a cassette player on a chair in front of the band, so some recordings do exist.

  2. Let me second what Xyros says above. I'm very glad you posted that documentary -- it's a real treat to be able to SEE the legendary Pat Hare in action.
