What a coincidence. As I turned off my TV last night, the last show I watched was a retro-classic Country Show of Flatt & Scruggs. They had Mother Maybelle Carter as a Guest and she played that washboard thingy (shown in your album art) on every song. Last thing I see, and now the first thing I see is Mother Maybelle
ReplyDeleteHi moze, probably the greatest musical highlight of my life was seeing Mother Maybelle and the Carter sisters live performance (with the Johnny Cash Show in Australia) I've seen and met many musical legends but I saw Maybelle Carter performing live. The "thingy" is actually an autoharp, also known as a zither. Maybelle played it often in her career, as did daughter June. But Maybelle's true forte was as a guitar player, she was truly brilliant on guitar. They say Maybelle had perfect pitch, she could listen to any song, any tune, any melody once and play it right back at ya.
DeleteExcellent collection !!! Thanks Bob. Mike. 👍🤩
ReplyDeleteCheers Mike, enjoy!
DeleteThanks Bob, I had seen Johnny many many times with different artists but can't recall seeing the show you mentioned, maybe I was still in the army at that time and missed it. Looking forward to playing Vol 131.
ReplyDeleteHi Ted, I only saw JC live once, at the WACA on March 28, 1973. In addition to Johnny & June and the Tennessee Three, on the tour with the show was Mother Maybelle and the Carter sisters, and Carl Perkins. I had no idea Carl Perkins was with the tour until halfway through a song this guitar player stepped forth and played a fantastic solo and JC annpunced "Ladies & gentlemen, Mr. Carl Perkins". Also all these megastars did their own sets, Maybelle and the Carter sisters did a set of a few of their songs. Carl Perkins did his own set of some of his biggest hits. It was so long ago I can't remember all the songs. But I do remember it was one of the best shows I ever saw.
DeleteDefinitely one of your best yet, thank you a bunch Bob.
ReplyDelete👋😁👍
DeleteThanks Bob for the info on the 1973 Cash tour. As I thought I was still in the service at that time, In Sydney until 74 and pretty sure the only visiting country star I saw while there was Slim Whitman in late 73 or early 74. I moved from Sydney to Puckapunyal in Apr 74. At that stage I was only half way through my service stint of 21 years.
ReplyDelete21 years, that's a long service Ted.
