Had a serious computer disaster last night. Looks like I'll be busy for the next couple of days sorting the mess out and recovering as much as I can. So no more posts until I get to the other side of this mess.

Post Mortem

While attempting to replace my C Drive with a system image last night, everything that could go wrong went wrong, and I ended up losing pretty well everything. Fortunately I have pretty well everything backed up over a dozen or so ext HDDs, so it's not a total disaster as I have copies of all my digital photos & docs & other personal data.

The good news is Win 10 is now reinstalled and my laptop is running well again.

The bad news for my blog followers is I lost the next month's posts. I did have the folder containing those future compilations backup up but somehow during in last night's fiasco it's vanished off to never-never land never to be seen again.

I have loads of blues/R&B/soul compilations on hand as I've been making them up for decades. I probably have enough of them to keep this blog running for another 2 years. But the jazz, soul party, hillbilly/country, rockabilly, country/pre-war blues compilations get made up in batches as I go along. So, what I had prepared for the coming month is no more. That was 30 days of postings: 1 blues/R&B/soul + 1 other genre, a total of 60 compilations, vanished into thin air.

I'll get around to compiling some more, but that'll take time and it'll be a few weeks at least until this blog gets back into full swing.

In the meantime I'll keep the ball rolling by continuing to post the blues/R&B/soul compilations, and perhaps a few old LPs from my collection.

I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of black gospel. While I find some of it truly stirring music (the early Staple Singers springs to mind), much of it tends to get a tad too boisterous for my tastes. So over the years I've found I prefer listening to white hillbilly/country gospel like Hank & Audrey Williams, Carl Story or The Louvin Brothers. Nonetheless, there are some black gospel recordings that I just adore. A fine example is on today's Assorted Blues, R&B, Gospel & Soul Recordings Volume 82.

Eddie Head & His Family - Lord I'm The True Vine (1930 Shellac 10" Columbia 14548-D)

"Lord, I'm the True Vine" is one of the earliest recorded precursors of gospel music, recorded in 1930 by the otherwise unknown Eddie Head & His Family. 

Eddie Head and His Family only had one recording session, on 22 April 1930 in Atlanta, Georgia, at which they cut four sides. The names of the family members who play guitar and tambourine in support of Eddie's vocal are unknown.

And following Eddie Head & His Family on Volume 82 are Brownie McGhee, Pigmeat Peterson, Wilbert Harrison, Arthur Prysock, Bobby Rush, Big Mama Thornton, Pinetop Perkins, and several other interesting blues/R&B artists including Elroy Peace with his humorous "Onion Breath Baby" recorded in 1953 for Swing Time Records in LA.

Today's Assorted Hillbilly & Country Recordings, now up to Volume 73, kicks off with some mighty fine guitar playing from Arthur Smith and Chet Atkins, followed by rare tracks by Chubby Parker, Curly Fox & Texas Ruby, Patsy Cline, Red Foley, The Louvin Brothers, Eddy Arnold, and other country greats.

Born Joseph Doctor, 8 September 1911, Charleston, South Carolina, USA, died 16 September 1988, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA. A street musician from his arrival in New York in 1935, Washboard Doc was on the fringes of black musical life thereafter, claiming to have recorded alongside Ralph Willis and Sonny Terry. He certainly provided backing for Alec Seward, and also played, with varying degrees of appropriateness, on many Victoria Spivey albums. Full albums by his trio, featuring Lucky (b. Cab Lucky) and Flash (b. John Whitner), led to a European visit in 1980.

 RIP Tina Turner

Well I woke this morning to hear the sad news that we have lost Tina Turner. All the TV news stations are saying she was the Queen of Rock, I guess to many that is how Tina will be remembered, however she was also a mighty powerful blues singer.
