ERROR CORRECTED

I just discovered an error in "Assorted Hillbilly & Country Recordings Vol 116", the title track was incorrectly labeled as "Squaws Along The Yukon" by Texas Jim Lewis, in fact this track is "Crawdad Song" by Texas Jim Lewis & His Lone Star Cowboys, which was recorded for Vocalion in 1937. I've had this track for several years now, and have no idea where it came from. While checking around today I came across it on YouTube with the same error (Crawdad Song mistitled as Squaws Along The Yukon) so this error has been spread elsewhere. Anyway, I have now corrected this. The track has been retitled as "Crawdad Song" and I've modified the album artwork with the new title. "You Get A Line And I'll Get A Pole" is the opening line, as well as an alternate title for "Crawdad Song". A new link is below, so please delete the previous download of  Assorted Hillbilly & Country Recordings Vol 116 and replace it with this corrected copy.

Recorded in France in 1969 and produced by Robin Hemingway with Manu Dibango's band.

Born in 1919 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Harold "Hal" Singer studied violin as a child but later switched to reed instruments. He ultimately settled on the tenor saxophone influenced by hearing Ben Webster and Lester Young.

From the late 1930s, he began performing in local bands, including Ernie Fields', before joining Jay McShann's orchestra in 1943 and then moving to New York. After working in other bands, he joined "Hot Lips" Page's band in 1947 and began working as a session musician with King Records.

In early 1948, he left Page, formed his own small group, and was signed to Mercury Records where he cut his first single "Fine As Wine" with a B side "Rock Around the Clock" (not the same tune as the Bill Haley recording). For the Savoy label, he recorded the instrumental "Cornbread", which made No. 1 on the R&B charts in September 1948, and raised Singer's profile and became his nickname.

In the early and mid-1950s, he recorded with Mercury, toured with R&B artists such as The Orioles and Charles Brown, and increasingly worked as a session musician. In 1958, he began recording with Prestige Records as a jazz soloist and performing at the Metropole Cafe in New York with jazz musicians such as Roy Eldridge and Coleman Hawkins.

In 1965, after touring Europe with Earl Hines' group, Singer remained in France, settling near Paris.

In 1992, he received the title of “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” from the French government. He released his last album in 2010 with David Murray, before quietly enjoying his retirement with his family. He passed away in Paris on August 18, 2020, just 2 months shy of his 101st birthday.

Singer's 1969 album, Paris Soul Food, featured him on saxophone and vocals; with Robin Hemingway, vocals, arrangements and album production; and Manu Dibango, saxophone, organ and arrangements, and won a French Record Academy award for best international LP. It's a flawless album, exquisitely performed and pleasant to listen to, that combines elements of jazz, funk, soul, R&B, and even rock/pop.

And it's most definitely an album that deserves another listen.

Update - August 13

Quite a few of the original members from when the blog first started are now back in, and I'm sending out Blogger invites daily to different people, slowly we're all getting back together. Don't forget to post a comment when you first arrive back into this new look blog, so I know who has made it and who has been left behind. Many of the old members have changed their emails, so it's taking me a bit of time to reach them.

It's my birthday in 2 day's time (August 15) so my wife and I are driving down to Pattaya for 5 nights. I'm not going to start posting any new compilations until after we return back home, which will be around the middle of next week. This will give time for others to get onboard. It will also give me a break after this recent disturbance. Once I resume posting we'll return to the usual schedule, which is 2 compilations every second or third day.

GONE PRIVATE AGAIN

OK welcome back. As you all know originally my blog was private. The main reason for being private was I can't be bothered dealing with dickheads and anonymous keyboard warriors. I just don't have any time in my life for that sort of bullshit. Anyway, some time ago I went public as I wanted to build a bigger following, but I always kept the thought in my head that if anything adverse happens I'll immediately revert back to being private. I'm now being targeted by an anonymous troll (I'm pretty certain I know who he is) so it's time to lock up the fortress and be a private blog again.

Most of the regulars should still be able to access the blog as your email addresses remain in my settings from when the blog was private in the past. There are some new people and I have sent out blogger invites.

Now that the blog is private again I need to know who has access and who doesn't, so if/when you get into the blog let me know, make a comment telling me who you are and that you're here OK.

Obviously as the blog is now private again there is no need to password lock the folders, so disregard all previous plans for a password.

Anyway my friends, that's the situation. Soon everything will settle down and we'll get back to normal.

Regards to all,

Bob.
