Assorted Recordings - Blues, R&B, Soul & Gospel Volume 70 today serves you up another eclectic hodge-podge of recordings dated from 1952 through to 2021. Among the fine artists featured here are: Elmore James, Pee Wee Crayton, Solomon Burke, Dinah Washington, Ike & Tina Turner, Anita Bryant, and Big Al Downing.
And The Best Of Country, Pre-War & Acoustic Blues, now up to Volume 42, today focuses on the Blind Blues/Gospel Singers, of which there were many back in the pre-war years. Kicking things off is Blind Willie Johnson, assisted by his wife Angeline. Blind Willie Johnson is one of my most favorite pre-war blues singers, I place him right up at the very top, alongside Son House and Robert Johnson. There's an infectious beat to most of Blind Willie Johnson's recordings and every time I listen to him my feet are instantly tapping away to his driving rhythms. Following Blind Willie is Blind Blake with "He's In The Jailhouse Now" a song that has been covered hundreds of times over the decades by a vast assortment of blues, hillbilly, country and folk singers. Others included here today are: Sonny Terry, Blind Willie McTell, Snooks Eaglin, Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Roosevelt Graves, The Blind Boys Of Alabama, and a few others.
It's interesting to note how many of the early and pre-war bluesmen prefixed their names with their afflictions. Out of the almost countless blind singers we have Blind Willie McTell, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Tom Wiggins, and Sonny Terry was often known as Blind Sonny Terry. Then there are the groups, such as The Blind Boys of Alabama and The Blind Boys of Mississippi. Plus we have Peg Leg Howell, Cripple Clarence Lofton, we have a couple of "Beady-Eyes" and there was an early blues singer called "Crapeye". One day when I've got nothing better to do I must go through Dixon and Godrich's "Blues and Gospel Records" and compile a more detailed list of these interesting names.
Anyway, as always my friends, dig in and enjoy.

Firstly a big thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions. After considering everything I've decided the best solution is to add the blog URL to the covers and include a note in the tracklist text files that also gives the blog URL along with a brief description. The URL added to the covers will be as unobtrusive as possible, blending in with the overall design. As I've said a few times I'm not particularly concerned about other blogs using my compilations, as long as others are listening to them and enjoying the music, that is the main thing.

Lots of great tracks for your listening pleasure this weekend. Assorted Recordings - Blues, R&B, Soul & Gospel Volume 65 (1949-1997) kicks off with the The Meditation Singers "Good Old Gospel Music", I just love this wonderful funky track (that's The Meditation Singers featured on the cover). Then two of my most favorite early John Lee Hooker recordings, 1953's "Stuttering Blues" - this is the real lowdown gutsy blues that JLH's reputation was built upon, and 1961's "Don't Turn Me From Your Door", a track covered by UK blues band Savoy Brown in 1969, and subsequently became a favorite of many of the early 70s blues bands. Lots more fine artists follow: Bettye Lavette, Peggy Scott, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Johnny Adams, Albert Washington and a few others. Also a rare early track from Big Bill Broonzy & His Fat Four "I Love My Whiskey" recorded in Chicago in 1949 for the Mercury label, with Bill playing electric guitar, backed by sax player Antonio Casey, pianist Carl Sharp, bass player Ransom Knowling and drummer Alfred Wallace. It's interesting to note that by this time Big Bill was a fairly polished city blues singer/musician, and early photos show him to be a sharp dresser, however when he started making overseas trips to UK and Europe in the early 1950s, for some reason Bill was put into overalls and photographed sitting on bails of hay and presented to his new audiences as some sort of singing farmer.
The Best Of Country, Pre-War & Acoustic Blues Volume 40 "Roll 'Em Pete" today focuses on early blues piano, with historical recordings by Pete Johnson, Big Maceo Merriweather, Mercy Dee Walton, St. Louis Jimmy, Leroy Carr, Roosevelt Sykes, Walter Roland, and a few other outstanding performers.
As always my friends, dig in and enjoy!
