    1. Hi Mike, it was an idea I carried for a long time, then about the middle of last year I put this together, I particularly wanted to put some focus on artists like Earl Hooker who many don't realize today was also very influenced by what the country music artists were doing.

  2. Some ideas for Volume 2: Big Al Downing - Mr. Jones, O.B. McClinton, & Charley Crockett ... always said Black Country Singers have a "soul" sound the White Singers don't.... and even Louis Armstrong did a great country album.

  3. One more name to throw out: Howdy Glenn (maybe the greatest Black C&W singer no one ever heard of).

  4. Very interesting for me, I am more used to white singers, now more soul for black singers, it doesn't surprise me, the blues is at the origin of all these roots... Thank you Bob!

    1. Hi Patrick, I find the crossover very interesting, how various artists can be equally at ease in different genres.

  5. Thanks Bob for this insight into black singers doing country. And thanks for the interesting story about Earl Hooker. I never would have guessed Earl doing "hillbilly" music.

  7. Thank you Bob, some real goodies in this one. I saw Charley Pride in concert years ago, a real good show. Kind of surprised to see Little Richard (#25) in there though, I don't recall ever hearing him sing a country song.

    1. Hi Wayne, yes the LR track made the final cut as "I'm so lonesome I could cry" is a country music classic, best known through Hank Williams. Glad you enjoyed this collection.
