 RIP John Mayall

John Mayall (29 November 1933 - 22 July 2024)

Woke this morning to hear the sad news that British blues legend John Mayall had passed away at his home in California on 22 July 2024, at the age of 90.

I was fortunate to have seen John Mayall perform live in Perth, Australia on three occasions. First in the early 1970s when he had Freddie Robinson in his band, again in the mid 1970s when Hi Tide Harris and Larry Taylor were with him, and the last time in 2003 when Buddy Whittington was his guitarist. I did have tickets to see him again in Perth in 2020, this time Carolyn Wonderland was handling the lead guitar role, and I was eagerly looking forward to seeing her playing live, but the covid lockdowns forced the cancellation of the tour.

  1. It’s always a shock to learn about a disappearance like that of John Mayall, albums I listened to a lot with his Bluesbreakers of course! Just yesterday I was talking with a friend of Peter Green and the wonderful "Hard Road"... His influence also to propose Mick Taylor to the Stones, "USA Union" with Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Larry Taylor and Harvey Mandel etc... Some Great Time! Thank you for all these great records John! Bon voyage...
