"Albums That Deserve Another Listen" today presents Otis Spann - Sweet Giant Of The Blues (1969)
When Otis Spann's "Sweet Giant Of The Blues" was released early in 1970 it was not particularly well received by the international blues aficionados. Otis Spann's name was so heavily associated with Muddy Waters and the Chicago Blues, and any wanderings off that well-trodden path were, at that time, frowned upon. And here we had Muddy's greatest piano player recording with a bunch of hip young whites led by the Wrecking Crew's Louie Shelton, who had previously worked with The Monkees and Nancy Sinatra. Nonetheless, I loved it, from first track to last, and exactly for the reasons most hard-core blues fans dismissed it. It was different, it was fresh, it broke out of that tired old mould the various members of the Muddy Waters blues bands followed when they made their solo albums. But most of all it's a thoroughly enjoyable, well recorded album. It's my favorite Otis Spann LP, and it definitely deserves another listen.
