Albums That Deserve Another Listen
June Carter - Hillbilly Favorites (British Archive Of Country Music CD D262)
Back before there was a "Cash" at the end of her name, June Carter was a member of Mother Maybelle's second-generation Carter Family band. She also had an extensive solo career, which is the focus of this CD. Because she was tone-deaf, June concentrated on humorous material, where comic timing was more important than getting all the notes right, and she was an expert in the style. This CD gathers a couple dozen of her major-label singles, including songs such as "No Swallerin' Place," "Root Hog Or Die," "Left Over Lovin'," and "You Flopped When You Got Me." Backing her up are top-flight musicians such as Chet Atkins, who worked extensively with Mother Maybelle & The Carter Sisters in the late 1940s and early '50s, plus the comedy duo of Homer & Jethro. Great sound quality and fun music, and a fascinating glimpse at June Carter's early career covering the years 1949-1955.
