DeleteNo surprises for me here Bob but my compliments to you, some really classy stuff. Particularly The Chambers Brothers. They did an excellent album with Barbara Dane. Come to think of it just about all they did was excellent. A fine example of raw soul/gospel power, teetering on the verge of uninhibited but never going over it. A bit like having three or four Wilson Picketts in one group. Or perhaps a cross between The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band and Sam and Dave. Superb harmonies. But how's this, in 2002 in a California Senate hearing on Record Label Accounting Practices, it was revealed that “Time Has Come Today” earned the Chamber Brothers less than $250 in royalties for the European market over 16 years. It was also discovered that copies of their records on Columbia’s foreign affiliate labels were being sold and the ensemble had not received any royalties from those sales. Also, in 2011, “Time Has Come Today” was used in the videogame Homefront, which sold over three million copies globally but The Chambers Brothers received only $4,000 divided evenly among them.
ReplyDeleteLester Chambers developed a number of medical problems that went untreated because he lacked insurance. He later became homeless, sleeping in a rehearsal hall in Novato, California, until Yoko Ono paid to rent a home for him and his son Dylan. Music is brilliant but the music business......forget it!
Hi Albert and thanks for the info, yes, lots of good people have been screwed over. I was a big fan or the Chambers Brothers, loved their recordings and would have loved to have seen them play live. Outstanding guitar playing.
DeleteHi Bob, I'm back among the living again and what do i see here but the Great Mavis Staples singing one of my favorite songs, 20th century express which we talked about earlier, i will most certainly download and give a listen to it and all the other great tunes that you have gifted us in my absence, Thank you again!!!!!
